Accreditation

Accreditation is a means by which reputed institutions and good practices are promoted, while safeguarding students' best interests and educational goals. It ensures a basic level of educational quality of an institution and ensures that the degrees of students will be recognized for their achievements.

Accreditation status is provided by accrediting bodies which are private, nongovernmental organizations that have been created specifically to review colleges, universities, and other institutions and programs to guarantee sound educational standards.

What is Accreditation?

Accreditation in education began over a century ago. The movement started as a public reaction to the vast differences among educational institutions that initially appeared to be similar. Accrediting bodies were voluntarily formed by educators to develop and implement common policies and standards to measure educational quality. From its inception, accreditation has been a, completely voluntary, peer group method of identifying educational institutions or programs which meet published standards of quality. A variety of regional and professional accrediting groups came into being in the early 1900s in response to the public's demand for reliable indicators of institutional quality.

The accreditation process ensures a review of a school's faculty, recruiting practices, admissions procedures, course content, and more. Influenced and affected by the role of accreditors, educational institutions are responsible for improving the quality and results of the education they provide.

Types of Accreditation

  • Primary Accreditation

Regional Accreditation is referred to as Primary accreditation. It is an overall review of the entire educational establishment by a country's national or regional accrediting bodies. These accreditation agencies perform a review of the entire educational institution/ university, from its infrastructure to its educational programs and student services. Depending on the location of the university, it must be approved by one of these agencies in order to grant degrees and be considered legitimate in the country in which it operates. In most cases, institutional accreditation must be maintained, meaning a school is reviewed every few years.
  • Secondary Accreditation

In addition to the accreditation of the entire educational institution or university, secondary accreditation is designated for specialized departments, programs, schools, or colleges within an institution or university. It focuses on particular aspects of the department, program, school, or institution's specified academic field of study.

Students who consider enrolling in an institution's degree program know the requirements of their future career field. In the wake of globalization, an increasing number of students are opting to study at educational Institutions or work for companies outside their home country. For institutions to compete with their international counterparts, they are now seeking international accreditation or secondary accreditation for their establishments to assure them that the educational program, policies and procedures of that institution are up to the international standards of education. International accreditation review is conducted by non-governmental, private agencies and is an international process for assessing and recognizing different types of educational institutions all over the world. International accreditation of the institution assures the institute's students that their degrees and credits will have increased acceptability around the world, should they decide to study or work abroad.
