Going Online in Training for Vocational & Professional Institutes

This article examines the trends taking place in the overall market, and more specifically how it affects trade schools, the students attending them, and the employers that hire the eventual certificate and degree holders.

The world these days is all about convergence of opportunities and mediums. The policy of the WTO is a case in point- the world’s richest countries want to centralize businesses and trade opportunities so as to take full advantage of labor localization and specialization. The implications of this trade policy have been hotly debated and criticized, but changes are in order on the economic horizon. While this move has spurted the growth of special industrial, economic and labor zones in some countries, it has also served to mobilize workers, especially skilled workers around the globe as barriers to labor movement have been reduced in other nations. Looking at Europe, we have the European Common Market as an economic zone where all EU members have almost completely open mobility in trades, jobs and vocations. The same can be felt in NAFTA and SAFTA across North and South America. So such Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) have in fact helped create resurgence and renewed enthusiasm for technical and vocational education and training.

Vocational education is on the rise again as there is a pressing need for skilled workers in businesses who have the hands-on skills necessary to just jump right in without additional on the job training.

Today’s professional and vocational educators are starting to focus more on training for employability as opposed to the typical knowledge-based education or degrees. Thus school students and school graduates are learning professional skills in computer science, legal services, catering, graphic design, engineering, nursing, landscaping amongst others. These courses are designed in view of the ever-increasing demand of those directly entering today's highly specialized business environments.

Education provision too has changed because most of these skills cannot be learned through traditional books and instruction methods; educators are starting to use a variety of strategies and techniques for teaching these specialized and generic skills. Thus Professional, technical and vocational students today are getting more opportunities to learn to interact and be productive not only with their standard book knowledge, but directly in their workplaces and environments they will soon be working in.

These career schools will continue to grow and expand their enrollment, to the benefit of the workforce, employers, and society. This will counter the fact that even though there has been a huge increase in the number of graduates across the globe, many of these graduates lack the direct skills to work productively from day one in a working environment.

In view of this changing scenario, professional and vocational training institutes have greater opportunities to expand their market and contribute to professional and technical labor requirements. From offering courses in language and cultural norms, to how-to books and instructions in one’s own language, professional and vocational training institutes can play a major role in educating and facilitating workers in the skilled trades and occupations. Going online creates further opportunities by traversing time and space.
