Some Reasons an Online College Degree Makes Better Sense

This article provides some solid reasons for pursuing an online degree, such as the flexibility to study whenever you want and structure your learning however you want and even the opportunity to get your degree faster.

Studies show that in the new millennium, the MBA is by far the most popular distance learning degree, with an increasing number of accredited business schools offering their master’s degree online. Program offerings vary vastly in terms of cost, quality, career support and graduation rates, with the many options available the candidate is cautioned to compare very carefully.

While there can be no doubt that a master’s degree in business significantly enhances an existing career, the truth is that many companies also offer reimbursement for their employees working towards an MBA. In fact, it has been surmised that more than 80 percent of MBA candidates pursue their degrees while working full time. Such workers expect to see significant salary increases once they graduate, and hope for promotion and greater job mobility. In consequence, many MBA candidates specialize to develop expertise with a career focus, such as global marketing, e-business technology or risk management.

To ensure best results, a prospective MBA student should carefully check the program offered, its faculty, and his or her own aptitude for advanced study before investing in course work.

Check the Program's Accreditation
Academic accreditation is conferred by an accrediting agency or agencies that set standards requiring up-to-date courses taught by qualified faculty to a diverse, well-prepared student body. In fact you may also want to make sure the accrediting agency itself is legitimate by checking its parent organizations and credentials with the relevant private or public bodies.

Ask About the Faculty
At accredited business schools, courses are taught by qualified faculty who make ongoing intellectual contributions to the business field. Graduate faculty also mentor and encourage networking.

Have the Prerequisites for Graduate Study
Before students begin master-level degrees in business, they also need core business fundamentals such as basic accounting, micro- and macroeconomics, marketing, and management foundations. Campus-based master's degree programs require students to have a bachelor's degree or equivalent to pursue graduate study. Online MBA degree programs have flexible admissions standards as well. Prospective master's candidates in business must have strong analytic and mathematical skills, excellent oral and written communication abilities, information technology know-how, and a global business perspective.

The Program of Study
The MBA is generally a two-year advanced degree program that provides working managers with the additional training they need to analyze and make predictions based on their real world working experience. Many campus-based MBA programs require that a master's degree candidate have at least 2 to 3 years of business experience before pursuing graduate study.

Minimum MBA Course Requirements
Irrespective of the pace of the master's degree program, accrediting agencies typically set standards for MBA coursework. For example in the USA, 18 semester hours of core business courses and at least 30 semester hours of graduate-level coursework in the specialization major are required.

MBA Specialization
Specializations are becoming more and more focused with employers understanding the value they bring to the workplace. Both on-campus and online graduate master's degree programs offer specializations. A large proportion of advanced coursework is presently made up of specialized courses. For example, in the US, typically at least 12 of the 30 hours in advanced coursework can be in an area of special business interest. Popular areas of concentration are finance, international business, accounting, business technologies, or supply chain management. Other specializations may reflect local business interests.

MBA Coursework
While course subject matter may be identical for the core courses, the course titles will not match. Topics studied in MBA programs include business ethics, global and international issues, legal and regulatory constraints, business technology, group and individual dynamics, diversity, financial theories, and market analysis. The case study method is popular, and students should expect to contribute to group learning through collaborative projects.

Different Degree Option
Prospective graduate business degree students who are practical, experience-oriented learners should consider the master's degree in management as an alternative to the more theoretical, number-driven MBA.

Ability to Improvise
A master of business administration has both the practical and the theoretical knowledge to solve problems in familiar and unfamiliar business settings. Today’s MBA may be required to innovate, and cope with unforeseen business challenges while adapting to changing business scenarios.
