DETC Accreditation

DETC accreditation is a complex, 8-step process. In the first step, the institution receives the DETC accreditation handbook, reviews application, and enrolls and starts writing self-evaluation report (SER). Once the institution has reviewed the handbook, the CEO/President would review the application for accreditation to make sure s/he understands how the accreditation process should be completed. The SER provides data on all areas of the institution’s operation, history, program offerings, student services, finances, etc. Another step is to submit the application and other required information, with the institution seeking online accreditation submitting application with the application fee. Afterward, initial applicants undergo readiness assessment, which implies that the institution would submit two copies of the draft of its SER within 60 days of the date of application. The DETC evaluator reviews the SER and writes a report detailing if the institution is deserving of accreditation. If evaluators find the institution inappropriate for online accreditation, then it will work hard on rectifying the deficiencies before it proceeds with the accreditation process. Once this is done, the institution submits course materials and the evaluator schedules on-site visit and surveys students. Afterwards, the institution then submits Self-Evaluation Report. The institute should do it at least 10 days prior to the on-site visit. Then the examining committee is selected, which typically consists of educators, executives, and practitioners in business, technical, and service fields. Each examiner critically reviews the self-evaluation report before making the on-site visit, ensuring s/he knows much about the institute seeking online accreditation. It’s imperative that all key staff members—faculty, principal, staff—are present or available to provide all possible support to extend the visiting team.

Once the visit is conducted, the head of the team writes and submits report. The object of the report is to clearly highlight its educational standards as well as other facilities it offers its students. The report also contains strengths and weaknesses of the institution, and lists committee findings and recommendations on how the institution could improve its facilities and focus on training its faculty on international standards. DETC then sends its detailed report to the institution for its comment. After all these formalities, the DETR commission takes its decision about whether the institution should be granted accreditation or not. If the accreditation is denied or withdrawn the DETC committed sends a detailed statement highlighting why it was not granted accreditation.
